John W Rogers Jr Ariel Investments

21 May

Where do I start with John. Most people don’t know him, if he walked down the street in many places across the united states people wouldn’t have a idea who he is. Even here in Chicago his home town most people have no clue who John is. I promise you though anyone who someone in Chicago knows who John is. I am talking anyone from Oprah, Michael Jordan, to president of united states of America barack obama.

Let me start with Johns story so you can get to know him a little better. He born into a well to do family, well educated with great jobs. John’s dad  gave him stock, for his 12th birthday,  and from that day he fell in love with investing. When you develop a love for something at 12 and continue to work on your passion there is good chance for success at very young age.

He went on to study at Princeton university, and he was star basketball player there. Then 3 years after graduating he started his own firm with loans from friends and family. He started Ariel investments with just one employee, and worked very hard to grow it. Each year he would gather new clients, and his family connections helped out a lot.

Today he owns  the largest african american owned investment firm in the nation. He would spend a lot of his time after school in early years at stock broker office. You know how a lot of people like to spend their time facebook or myspace John would spend it a office.

Your connections in life can only take you so far, and John had the knowledge and passion to back up his company. So that’s why today he owns a multi billion dollar company.

When you are a winner everyone wants to hang with you, and that is the case for John. He also sponsors a lot of events across the nation.

He has a GREAT heart, every year he helps out a lot of kids from the inner city get into investing world. He teaches them, and a lot of them go on become very successful. They run accounts and learn how trade and everything in johns class.

Here enjoy pictures of John W Rogers hanging with out with some of chicago’s elite

Your World ENDS in 3 Years ?

10 Nov

This is passage from Stephen Coveys 7 Habits.

PLEASE FIND A PLACE TO READ THESE NEXT FEW PAGES where you can be alone and Uninterrupted.   Clear your mind of everything except what you will read and what I will invite you to do. Don’t worry about your schedule, your business, your family, or your friends.  Just focus with me and really open your mind.

In your mind’s eye, see yourself driving to the funeral of a loved one.  Picture yourself driving to the funeral parlor or chapel, parking the car and getting out. As you walk inside the building you notice the flowers, the soft organ music.  You see the faces of friends and family you pass along the way.  You feel the shared sorrow of losing, the joy of having known, that radiates from the hearts of the people there.

As your walk down to the front of the room and look inside the casket, you suddenly come face to face with yourself.  This is your funeral, three years from today. All these people have come to honor to express feelings of love and appreciation for your life.

As you take a seat and wait for the services to begin, you look at the program in your hand.  There are to be four speakers. The first is from your family, immediate and also extended-children, brother’s sisters, nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents who have come from all over the country to attend.  The second speaker is one of your friends, someone who can give a sense of what you were as a person.  The third speaker is from your work or profession.  And the fourth is from your church or some community organization where you’ve been involved in service.

Now think deeply.  What would you like each of these speakers to say about you and your life?  What kind of husband, wife, father or mother would you like their words to reflect? What kind of son or daughter or cousin?  What kind of friend? What kind of working associate?

What character would you like them to have seen in you?  What contributions, what achievements would you want them to remember?  Look carefully at the people around you.  What difference would you like to have made in their lives?

For me I found this passage hit hard because, when I hear people say live as if I am going to die tomorrow.  I understand the meaning, but the odds are better of me marrying Meagan Good this week.   The odds of me dying in next 3 years are still slim, but they amount change can make in 3 years is ………………….

Time is like a Big Hour Glass

15 May

24 Hours in a day is the Law of man on earth.   I don’t care if you are Jesus or Warren Buffet you only get 24 hours in a day to what it is that you do.  Now the biggest difference between most successful people is their ability to manage time.

This is a topic you could spend hours on and still have hours of info left on time management.    When you can effectively utilize your time in day life becomes more productive bottom line.  There are certain exercises, and plans you can put into effect to get more out of your day.  Time management starts when you are really young.   I know some children that manage their time better than adults. Student athletes have to manage time well, free time during season is very limited and it takes extreme dedication.

When it comes to adult life time management is critical.  There is right now so much I want to say, but I will do this as three part series.   I am going to ask some questions and let think about them for week.    Why do people get so easily distracted by things while online?  How do people manage to waste years of their life in front of a TV?  Why do you not know anyone that makes more 5 million dollars a year that does all the work themselves?   What Determines how much your time is worth in a dollar sense an hour?
